Recent increase in number of dengue cases has created panic among most of us. In metro areas like our Trans Hindon area where a lot of construction activities and poor sanitation exist, dengue is a realty.
Dengue is a viral fever caused by a virus which spreads by mosquito bite. Usually it presents as high grade fever, headache. bodyache, pain around eyes and rashes may appear all over body. Dengue is a self limiting illness and most of cases recover within a short span. However a small percentage of cases may deteriorate and may pose a life threatening situation.
Platelet count usually decrease and increase on its own and donot pose any serious problem.
IT IS A MYTH THAT LOW PLATELET COUNT IS DANGEROUS IN ALL CASES OF DENGUE.
Normal platelet count is 1.5 to 3.5lac and and platelet count as low as 20,000 are usually safe in dengue. Only alarming sign is if Patient is bleeding from some site like bleeding fron nose, mouth, bleeding in urine or stool.
If you or any known person is suspected of dengue donot panic. Consult your doctor. Donot go for investigations, it may not be necessary.
Most common cause of complication and death in Dengue is not Low Platelet Count but internal changes in water and electrolyte balance in body. These imbalances can be corrected by proper advice and precious life can be saved.
