Facts about Eye Donation
Eyes can be donated only after death.
Each eye donation helps two people to see.
Age or poor sight does not affect eye donation. Even if one has had a cataract surgery or any other eye surgery, his/ her eyes can be donated.
Eyes for donation must be removed within six hours of death. Contact the Eye Bank nearest to you immediately. The doctor will attend at the earliest and the eyes will be removed in the house within 10-15 minutes.
There will be no disfigurement of the face of the deceased.
Eyes can be donated even if the deceased has not formally pledged his/ her eyes, as long as he has not voiced any objection to it during his life.
After removal, the eyes are taken to the Eye Bank, analyzed and preserved. The cornea is transplanted within 72 hours, at the latest.
Open discussion about eye donation with his/ her family is necessary if a person wishes to donate their eyes. They must take responsibility for fulfilling his/ her wish upon their demise.
Commitment to the cause of eye donation can be made by filling in a pledge form.
Active responsibility should be taken by all members of the public for motivating family, friends and neighbors to donate eyes, whenever a death takes place in their circle.
